Playing, walking, and training are important for your dog, but rest is just as essential. A dog that doesn't get enough rest can actually become more hyperactive, irritable, or overtired.
Dogs need a lot of sleep
Dogs sleep and rest for a large part of the day. The exact amount varies per age, breed, and individual dog. Puppies and senior dogs often need extra rest, but adult dogs also need to be able to relax sufficiently.
Rest helps process stimuli
During a walk, training session, or playtime, your dog takes in many impressions. Resting afterward allows them to process those stimuli and recover from physical and mental exertion.
Too little rest can cause restlessness
A dog that is tired does not always calm down on its own. Some dogs actually become more hyperactive, start biting more, keep demanding attention, or struggle to relax. This can be a sign that your dog needs rest.
Provide a quiet place
Give your dog a designated spot where they won't be constantly disturbed. A basket, crate, or quiet corner in the house can help them settle down better. Leave your dog alone as much as possible when they are sleeping there.
Alternate between play and rest
After a walk, a game of fetch, or a round of tug-of-war, a period of rest is a good idea. This prevents your dog from being constantly overstimulated and ensures that playtime stays fun.
Tip from Baloe 🐾
Doing more isn't always better. Sometimes a nice nap is exactly what your dog needs after a busy walk or play session.
